Front Entry

During the holistic design stage, conscious thought was put into the experience one would have upon entering the space.  With Feng Shui in mind, the natural flow of energy pulls one inward with anticipation of “what’s next?”

Complimenting the grand scale of the space, it was important that the main entry create a strong, yet welcoming feeling.

The guest wing has two bedrooms that are mirror images of each other.  A sleeping loft and separate bathroom in each offer guests their own privacy and a serene place for personal time.  Skylights add additional light and vaulted ceilings create an open and airy feeling in the rooms.

Guest bedrooms & baths

A one-of-a-kind pair of antique Chinese monastery doors that were pegged into the floor and door lintels during the building of the adobe walls grace the entrance to each master suite.  Vaulted ceilings and lots of windows provide light during the day and a view of the stars at night.  The undulating adobe walls with glass block pillars built into them offer additional light and give the entire area an ancient feeling.  Walking through the winding hallway leaves one with anticipation of what is next.

The master shower serves double duty as a steam room and shower.  Glass block pillars surround the ‘snail shell” shaped shower enclosure providing extra light.  The combination of having both the Jacuzzi and steam room make for a spa-like environment, perfect for personal grooming, self-care  and relaxation.

Great Room

As one steps down from the flagstone entry, large timbers possess a warm beauty and project a sense of strength and stability.  The vaulted ceiling and wrap-around dodecagon (12 sided) second floor configuration rising above the great room contains the space with an expansive yet intimate atmosphere.

The intention to create a space where the flow of energy between inside space and outside space is seamless was a primary design element throughout the building.  The double french doors of the dining area open to flagstone patios with organic gardens directly outside the door and the “ponderosa park” just beyond.  Natural flagstone was used both inside and out as flooring, patios and walkways.  Second floor sleeping alcoves (right) surrounded by natural juniper posts from the property and hand-forged iron railings mirroring the organic oak branches outside, continue the theme.

Solar Hallway

Passive solar design with lots of windows to the south, bring in both light and warmth from the sun.  Designed with the difference in sun angle between winter and summer as a key design factor, roof overhangs prevent the hot summer sun from entering while maximizing the sun’s benefits during the winter months.

Galley Style

Gourmet Kitchen

As the kitchen always tends to be the place where people congregate, this kitchen was designed with efficiency enjoyment and comfort in mind.  Open to both the great room and dining room and with two large “solatube” skylights, it is bright and roomy enough for 4 “cooks”.   The appliances are all low energy use like the SunFrost refrigerator which is designed to run on solar energy and the Asko dishwasher is low energy and low water usage as well.

Custom niches (above) gave our plasterer an opportunity for personal creativity.

Master Bath

Designed with the focus of self-care and renewal in mind, the master bathroom is at the same time elegant and comfortable.  Custom elements inspired by leftover materials, like the granite alter shelf (right) are common throughout the home.  The entire master bath, hall and closet are tiled in natural, travertine combined with handmade custom tile accents.

A saw blade from an old sawmill finishes the inside of the keyhole arches.

A living example of connectedness on the planet...
